Grâce à une approche multidisciplinaire, ce document constitue la synthèse des connaissances acquises sur la filière conchylicole (huîtres creuses et moules) de la côte Ouest du Cotentin depuis 3 ans. Les aspects positifs, les contraintes et les difficultés physiques, administratives, socio-économiques et biologiques qui caractérisent cette activité ont été abordés tour à tour. Leur synergie a été analysée pour mettre en évidence les mesures de gestion réaliste les plus adaptées.

The aims of the network are 1 - to prevent the introduction and spread of exotic pathogens, 2-to study the means to decrease the impact of pathogens already present and to survey their evolution. Etat des stocks conchylicoles normands en 2000 ArchiMer

Crassostrea gigas and Mytilus edulis are reared in four areas along the eastern coast of Cotentin (Normandy). Every five years, a stock assessment survey, based on a stratified random sampling is carried out using aerial photographs. During September 2000, oysters bags and mussel banks random samplings have been weighed on leasing grounds and in random sampled farms in order to evaluate the overall total gross and net weights breeded (oysters 40 000 and mussels 17 000 metric tons, net weights). Age compositions of each stock in each rearing area have been computed. This last stock assessment showed that cultural regulations are less and less observed in Normandy's breeding areas. This report describes the mussel Mytilus edulis sampling stock strategy developed to carry out stock assesments along the French Normandy coastline between 1989 and 1993. The overall totalnetweight reached 13,992 metric tons in 1993 with 27% precision level. Simultaneously, a growth study was carried out on 36 experimental sites to estimate overall variability. Individual total weight varied from 6.6 to 12 g at rearing cycle completion. An empirical management model conceming the Western Cotentin rearing areas was proposed and explained 68% of total weight variance. L'élément marquant intervenu durant l'année 1995 est l'augmentation considérable de la production d'huîtres commercialisables sur l'ensemble du littoral avec 44.000 tonnes produites en 1995 (dont 34.500 t pour le seul département de la Manche) contre 36.000 tonnes en 1990. Cette augmentation était déjà pressentie dans un précédent rapport (Jeanneret et al, 1992), car de nombreux terrains concédés n'étaient pas encore mis en exploitation. The Normandy region is presently a leading shellfish rearing area in France yielding 35,000 metric tons of oysters C. gigas and Il,000 metric tons of mussels M. edulis on a yearly basis. Preliminary studies were initiated in 1989, 1991 and 1992 to develop the sampling strategy for cultured mussel stock assessment. Comprehensive mussel stock assessment and concomitant growth monitoring were carried out in 1993 to study mussel population and optimize overall s1l1ellfish culture management. Performance of triploid Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) reared in high carrying capacity ecosystem : survival, growth and proximate biochemical composition ArchiMer

Triploid oysters Crassllstrea gigas were: produced in 1990 by treating fertilized eggs with cytochalasin B (CS). Triploids, treated diploids, and controls were deployed early 1991 in a high carrying capacity ecosystem on the Eastern Coast of Normandy (France). A monthly monitoring in 1992 showed that triploids yielded significantly higher growth rate and biochemical composition. However, growth was more heterogeneous. No evidence was found for a length or weight bimodal frequency distribution within triploid groups after a 26 months rearing cycle. Triploids showed retardation of gametogenesis. Results from 2 000 are globally very close of those from 1998. Mortality of adults reached 14% and juvenile 6% which represent a low death rate. For this year the most blow area is the Baie des Veys with 31% death rate at Géfosse. Observed growth this year had been weaker than the past two years despite the spring and automnal growth. At spring, the higher recorded growth rate on the West coast with 0.42% (regional average : 0.29%). This seasonal trend seems more and more obvious every year. The national REMORA network is targeted on the studies of growth, flesh quality and mortality of a sample of cupped oyster Crassostrea gigasdistributed on 9 stations along the coast of Normandy. As a better precision is needed for regional purpose, 7 new stations have been added. A total number of 16 stations is now sampled from Chausey to Meuvaines. Weak rates of mortality have been noticed in 2002 on both adults (7%) and spat (6 %). These rates are the weakest ever seen. The mortality rates in the Baie des veys were less than 10 %. The network named REMONOR (REseau MOllusqueNORmandie) aims to assess mortality, growth and tissue quality of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, cultivated in Normandy over an annual cycle. This local network relies on the same material and methods as the national one named REMORA (REseau Mollusques Ressources Aquacoles). The study was carried out in 17 sites, which were distributed in the four basins where oyster rearing occurs in Normandy (West and East coast of Cotentin, Baie des Veys and Meuvaines). In 2003, a new site was added, which was located in the area of Ver-Sur-Mer (Calvados). The results obtained in 2003 showed a low annual mortality for adults (8%) as well as for juveniles (10%).
